Bosch error code E:54: The heat pump compressor is not running or is drawing abnormal current. Heat-pump dryers cannot dry without compressor function.
The heat pump compressor is not running or is drawing abnormal current. Heat-pump dryers cannot dry without compressor function.
Compressor overload protectors trip when the motor overheats. Unplug the appliance and wait at least an hour before retesting — many overload trips are temporary and clear automatically once the windings cool.
On refrigerators, ensure 1+ inch clearance behind the unit and at least 3 inches above. Vacuum the condenser coils (rear or bottom of the appliance) — heavy dust buildup forces the compressor to work harder and overheat. On heat-pump dryers, ensure the bottom intake vents are unblocked.
Tools needed: Vacuum with brush attachment
Plug the appliance back in. You should hear a soft hum within 30 seconds (the inverter ramping up). On older non-inverter compressors, you'll hear a click (start relay), then a quieter run hum. A repeated click-click-click followed by silence is the start relay tripping repeatedly — the compressor is failing or has failed.
Disconnect power. Locate the start relay and capacitor on the side of the compressor (usually behind a small black cover). Test the capacitor for capacitance with a multimeter — it should match the printed value within 10%. Test the relay for continuity. A failed start relay or weak capacitor prevents the compressor from starting.
Tools needed: Multimeter with capacitance mode, Screwdriver set
Disconnect the start components and test the three terminals on the compressor itself (Common, Start, Run). Compare resistance between each pair. The values should be within 1–10 Ω of each other. An open winding (infinite resistance) means the compressor is burned out and the appliance requires sealed-system service or replacement.
Tools needed: Multimeter
If the compressor itself has failed (windings open, internal mechanical seizure, or refrigerant loss), the repair requires EPA-certified refrigerant handling and brazing. This is not a DIY repair — it requires specialised tools and EPA section 608 certification.
Heat-pump compressor diagnosis and replacement requires sealed-system refrigerant work. Call an EPA-certified appliance tech.
