Whirlpool error code F28: The moisture sensor bars inside the drum are not reading correctly. The dryer may end cycles early or run indefinitely.
The moisture sensor bars inside the drum are not reading correctly. The dryer may end cycles early or run indefinitely.
The two metal sensor strips are inside the drum, typically near the lint filter opening. Clean with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or fine steel wool (0000 grade). Dryer sheet wax is the primary cause of sensor misreads and is easily removed.
Tools needed: Rubbing alcohol, Cotton balls or fine steel wool
Unplug the appliance from the wall for 60 seconds, then plug back in. Some control board errors are transient and clear after a full power reset. If the error returns, continue diagnostics.
Use a multimeter to verify the outlet provides the correct voltage — 120V for most appliances, 240V for electric dryers and ranges. Low or fluctuating voltage can cause control board faults.
Tools needed: Multimeter
Disconnect power and remove the control board (usually behind the control panel or in the back service panel). Look for burnt components, swollen capacitors, scorch marks, or corroded solder joints.
Tools needed: Screwdriver set
Trace each connector on the control board and firmly press each one home. Loose connectors are a very common cause of intermittent board errors. Look for chafed or burned wires near connector bodies.
Before replacing the board, confirm all sensors (thermistors, pressure sensors, door switches) connected to it test within spec. A bad sensor can overload an output on the board and appear as a board failure.

Order the exact OEM control board for your model number. Photograph all wiring connections before disconnecting them. Transfer connectors one at a time to avoid wiring errors.
