Whirlpool error code E3: The freezer evaporator fan motor is not running at the expected speed or has failed. Cold air cannot circulate to the fresh food section without this fan.
The freezer evaporator fan motor is not running at the expected speed or has failed. Cold air cannot circulate to the fresh food section without this fan.
Unplug the refrigerator. Remove all food to coolers. Leave the freezer door propped open for 24–48 hours. Heavy frost buildup around the fan is the number one cause of this error — ice physically blocks the fan blades.
Tools needed: Towels
Once the freezer is fully defrosted, plug the refrigerator back in and open the freezer. Listen for the fan to start within 2–3 minutes. If it hums but doesn't spin, there may still be ice around the motor shaft or a mechanical jam.
Disconnect power. Remove the freezer contents and the rear panel inside the freezer (typically held by 4–6 screws). The evaporator fan motor is located behind this panel. Check that the fan blade spins freely by hand.
Tools needed: Screwdriver set, Nut driver
Disconnect the motor's wiring connector. Test the motor windings for continuity with a multimeter. If the motor reads open (infinite Ω) or significantly out of spec, the motor is burned out and needs replacement.
Tools needed: Multimeter
If the fan motor tests good but still doesn't run, the relay on the main control board that powers the fan may have failed. This requires checking voltage output at the motor connector when the compressor is running.
Tools needed: Multimeter
Manually defrost the freezer (unplug 24–48 hours) before replacing the motor. Most E3 fan errors are caused by ice-blocked fans, not a failed motor.
