Check your owner's manual for the exact code shown on your display. Most user-setting indicators (Child Lock, Demo Mode, Sabbath Mode, Cooling Off) are intentional features rather than faults.
On most appliances, hold the dedicated Child Lock button (often marked with a key or padlock icon) for 3–5 seconds. The indicator should disappear and a chime confirms the lock is released. On some models, two buttons must be held together — refer to your manual.
Demo Mode shows lights and the display but disables the compressor (refrigerators) or motor (washers). To exit: hold Energy Saver + Lighting (Samsung), or Refrigerator + Power Cool (LG), or the equivalent button combo for 8–10 seconds. A chime confirms the exit and full operation resumes within a few minutes.
Once the user setting is disabled, run a short cycle (or check that the compressor kicks in for a refrigerator) to confirm normal operation has returned. If the appliance still doesn't respond, the issue is no longer a user setting and you should check for an actual fault code.
User-setting indicators often re-appear after power outages or battery changes (on appliances with battery-backed clocks). Note the disable sequence somewhere you can find it again — a sticker on the side of the appliance is a popular DIY approach.
