How to Replace a Dryer Heating Element

No heat from your electric dryer? The heating element is the most likely cause. This guide walks through replacement on common Whirlpool, Maytag, and Samsung dryers.

Symptoms of a Failed Heating Element

Clothes tumble but don't get warm or hot

Dryer runs a full cycle but clothes are still damp

Error code for no heat (HE on Samsung, other brands may show heat sensor errors)

Safety First

Electric dryer heating elements operate at 240V. Always unplug the dryer COMPLETELY before beginning this repair.

Step 1: Confirm the Element Is Faulty

Remove the element and test it with a multimeter on continuity mode. No continuity = failed element. If the element shows continuity, also test the thermal fuse and thermostat.

Step 2: Order the Correct Part

The heating element part number varies by model. Use your full model number to ensure compatibility.

Step 3: Access the Heating Element

On most Whirlpool/Maytag dryers, the element is in the rear panel:

Remove the back panel screws

The element housing is visible on the right side

On Samsung dryers, the element is in the rear as well:

Remove the rear access panel

Step 4: Remove the Old Element

Disconnect the two wire connections from the element terminals

Remove the mounting screws

Slide out the element from its housing

Step 5: Install the New Element

Insert new element into housing

Secure mounting screws

Reconnect wire terminals

Step 6: Reassemble and Test

Replace the back panel. Plug in the dryer. Run a 20-minute cycle to verify heat.
