How to Replace a Washing Machine Door Latch
A failed door latch is one of the most common washer repairs. This DIY guide covers front-load door latch replacement for popular brands.
Signs Your Door Latch Has Failed
Difficulty Level
Beginner — no specialized tools required. Most people complete this repair in 30–45 minutes.
Step 1: Order the Correct Part
Find your full model number (inside the door frame on most washers). Search for your model + 'door latch assembly'. Use OEM parts for best reliability.
Step 2: Unplug the Washer
Step 3: Remove the Door Boot Seal Retaining Ring
On most front-loaders, the door latch is accessed by removing the outer door boot seal retaining ring. Use a flat screwdriver to pry it off the rim. Pull the front of the boot seal into the drum.
Step 4: Remove the Front Panel Screws
Locate and remove the screws at the top and bottom of the front panel. Tilt the panel forward.
Step 5: Disconnect the Latch Wiring Harness
Disconnect the electrical connector from the old latch. Note or photograph the wire positions.
Step 6: Remove the Old Latch
Remove the mounting screws holding the latch in the door opening. Slide out the old latch.
Step 7: Install the New Latch
Insert the new latch, secure with mounting screws. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Step 8: Reassemble
Replace front panel and boot seal retaining ring. Plug in the washer and run a test cycle.
