Whirlpool Sud Error: Causes, Fixes, and Prevention
The Sud code appears when the washer detects too many suds. It's almost always caused by using the wrong detergent. Here's what to do.
What Is the Whirlpool Sud Code?
The Sud code appears when the washer's pressure sensor detects excessive foam/suds in the drum. The machine pauses, adds extra water, and runs additional rinse cycles to clear the suds.
This is one of the most common — and most preventable — washer issues.
Cause 1: Wrong Detergent (Most Common)
HE (High Efficiency) washers MUST use HE-labeled detergent. Non-HE detergent creates 5–10x the foam of HE detergent, overwhelming the machine.
Fix: Drain the current load, refill with clean water, run a rinse cycle. Going forward, use only HE detergent.
Cause 2: Too Much HE Detergent
Even HE detergent can cause sudsing if you use too much. More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes.
Fix: Measure carefully. For most HE washers with soft or normal water, use Line 1 of the detergent cup (not Line 2 or 3).
Cause 3: Residual Detergent Buildup
Years of overdosing can leave detergent residue in the drum that reactivates.
Fix: Run monthly cleaning cycles with a washer cleaner tablet and no laundry.
Is There a Mechanical Issue?
In rare cases, a faulty pressure sensor can falsely trigger Sud. If you are confident in your detergent usage and Sud still appears, test the pressure sensor.
